1. How did your exposure to extreme poverty in the Peruvian jungles lead you to start a business?
It was my first exposure to extreme poverty that impacted me in many ways. I also saw how Peruvians were far more effective at sharing the Gospel than “Western” missionaries and how local pastors could be supported with as little as $50 per month.
2. What inspired you to commit to giving away a minimum of 50 percent of your profits?
At the time we thought 50 percent was the maximum we could give while still paying taxes and growing a business. Originally, our goal was only $1,000 a month, which at that time, went a long way in Peru.
3. You’ve donated $16 million to Christian charities and missions. Tell us how you’ve seen your donations used.
In the past 30 years, we have supported many different ministries on six continents. In Africa, we support I WAS HUNGRY, a ministry that helps the ultra-poor escape generational poverty by teaching farming methods that dramatically increase crop yields. Teachings are deeply rooted Biblical principles and seek to bring about holistic lifestyle transformations.
In Peru we support UNITED SERVANTS ABROAD which operates a Bible training center for national pastors and provides vital services to tribal groups in the Amazon.
In the Philippines we support KOZ INTERNATIONAL, a ministry that provides Christian education to at-risk youth in densely populated urban environments. These are just a few of the many ministries NutraMedix has supported over the past 30 years.
4. How did you first learn about the herb Cat’s claw?
I was on a trip with other pilots learning how to survive in the unlikely event of a crash. Local tribesmen cut a woody vine and we drank the water that flowed from it. That was Cat’s claw. They also explained how they used the bark from the vine to help resolve multiple health issues.
5. What is Samento and how did it become your best selling product?
Samento is a rare type of Cat’s claw that is far more powerful than traditional Cat’s claw. God gave us a unique and powerful form of Cat’s claw that has changed many lives around the world. A medical center in Eastern Europe began using our Samento with hundreds of patients and news of the results spread quickly.
6. What is VitalMedix? How did you decide to give 100 percent of the profits of its sales to IWasHungry.net, a ministry in Zimbabwe?
VitalMedix is a combination of two powerful medicinal plants: our Samento and Moringa from Zimbabwe. In 2020, I asked Chuck Bentley, CEO of Crown Financial Ministries, how we could support his organization. He then told me about Crown Financial’s partnership with Foundations for Farming to create IWasHungry.net. IWasHungry.net is a ministry that equips African farmers to escape generational poverty by teaching biblical stewardship principles for farming, family and finances.
