6 Ways to Beat Holiday Shopping Stress

Shopping early isn’t a bad idea if it means less stress leading into the holiday season. Maybe the stores putting out holiday merchandise and announcing sales in October are onto something. Or maybe everyone’s just excited for the holiday season to arrive. Either way, spending money, family, and social gatherings, beating the crowds, travel, eating, and hosting all contribute to stress during the holidays.

Save time, stress, and money with these 6 tips to tackle holiday stress before it becomes a thing.

    Make a Holiday To-Do List

Keeping yourself organized can help reduce stress surrounding all the things that need to get done. Start by making a list of everyone you plan to shop for and the gift you’d like to get for them. That way you won’t forget anyone. Consider creating a list of tasks that need to be accomplished – planning a holiday party, cooking, or baking, holiday travel plans, etc. Take it a step further by organizing them by priority that way you know what needs to get done first. Check things off the list as you go and be proud of yourself for making headway.

    Shop Early

The longer you go without completing your holiday shopping list, the more stress may build up. Instead, shop early so you can focus on enjoying the holidays with loved ones. There are plenty of stores advertising early holiday sales now. And if you come across the same item cheaper closer to the holidays, many stores will match the price.

    Make Self Care a Priority

Part of managing stress and happiness is prioritizing you. That includes regularly taking part in self-care. Self-care is part of how well you cope with daily stressors. It’s anything that you do that feels nourishing – drinking enough water, getting adequate sleep, eating well, maintaining your personal hygiene preferences, etc. Self-care may be different for everyone, but what remains is the importance of making it a priority.

Find Ways to Manage Stress Daily

Be aware of what stresses you out during the holidays and be proactive. If large crowds are overwhelming or discouraging, consider shopping online or during non-peak hours. Enlist help to alleviate potential stressors. And take time every day to reduce stress in ways that work for you. Even if you only have 10 minutes, that’s enough time to ease some tension and help you feel more energized.

Here are a few ways to manage stress on a regular basis:

    • Try meditation or deep breathing
    • Listen to your favorite music
    • Read a good book
    • Take a walk outside or sit under a tree
    • Wash your face or take a hot shower
    • Grab some coffee with a friend
    • Spend time with family or loved ones
    • Call a friend or video-chat
    • Exercise
    • Keep a journal

    Nourish Your body

The holiday season is a busy time and sometimes nutrition can take a backseat. The challenge is your body still needs nourishment. Remember that any food is better than no food. Bring snacks when out shopping for the day to avoid getting too hungry before your next meal. Going too long without eating can leave you feeling ravenous and more likely to make poor choices and overeat when you do finally have a moment to eat.

Fill your day with nutrient-dense and satisfying foods including lean protein, healthy fats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables to keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer. Include less healthy foods that feed your soul so you can enjoy the holiday season without feeling restricted.

    It’s OK to Say No

It’s easy to say ‘yes’ to every request, event, and gathering during the holidays, but not if it comes at the expense of your happiness and well-being. Setting healthy boundaries can alleviate stress and provide for a more enjoyable holiday season. Know your limits and when to speak up. Saying “no” is perfectly OK. Remember to give yourself a pat on the back because setting boundaries is not easy but can be well worth it.

Feeling stressed during the holidays is natural. With so many things mounting on your to-do list on top of your regular daily responsibilities, it can quickly become overwhelming. Prevent burnout by taking steps to reduce holiday stress so you can enjoy the holidays and all that comes with it.
